A new McDonalds exhibit opened at the Castle Museum in Saginaw on Friday.
"It's as American as apple pie and that's one of the reasons we wanted this exhibit here," said President and CEO of Castle Museum, Ken Santa.
Santa is thrilled to have an exhibit that's all about McDonalds in his museum. Happy Meal Memories: A Celebration of Toys opened today, showcasing more than 200 Happy Meal toys dating back to 1982.
"You can see all of the Happy Meal toys and relate it to that year in your life. It's a reflection of culture at that particular time," Santa said.
Tony D'Anna owns and operates McDonalds restaurants in the Saginaw area. D'anna can't think of a better place to have this exhibit.
"We love this area. We support it. And we want people to share in the excitement of what's going on," D'Anna said.
The McDonalds owner even had a Happy Meal memory of his own to share.
"Beanie Babies. That turned into so much excitement for people. They were just buying those Ty Beanie Babies. And that went on we brought those back a few times. And I'll always remember that as a big excitement of Happy Meals," D'Anna said.
There's more to the exhibit than toys.
"We have paraphernalia and memorabilia from local McDonalds franchisees," Santa said.
So if you want to remember a time when a few cents went a long way, or think back to when McDonalds still tried to keep track of how many people they served -- or if you just want to relive some old memories, you'll have your chance.
"Whether you're an adult. Whether you're a child. You can come in here and get a big smile on your face I guarantee it," Santa said.

On Saturday, November 19, the American Natural History Museum in New York City will welcome a new special exhibit to its halls, titled "Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration." Before you read any further, you should know this isn't just any ordinary space exhibit.

Beyond Planet Earth isn't a collection of relics from the space race and a history of America's efforts to explore the vastness surrounding Earth. Andreas Gursky’s “Rhein II” sold for $4,338,500 at an auction of contemporary art at Christie’s auction house in New York on November 8, making it the most expensive photo sold at auction. This is the second time a Gursky print has held this distinction. His 2001 photo “99 Cent II Diptychon” sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $3,346,456 in 2007, and was only displaced in May 2011, when a 1981 Cindy Sherman self-portrait sold for $3,890,500 at Christie’s. The buyer of “Rhein II” is unknown.

“Rhein II,” a signed chromogenic print in an edition of six, is digitally retouched to show the banks of Germany’s Rhine River as bare stretches of green. Prior to the sale, the auction house estimated that the print would sell for between $2,5 million and $3.5 million. According to Christie’s, other prints in the edition are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, Munich’s Pinakothek der Modern, and the Glenstone Collection in Potomac, Maryland.

Like most of Gursky’s works, “Rhein II” is big: 143 inches by 73 inches. It’s also face-mounted to Plexiglas, a process that some collectors have feared could cause conservation issues, such as warping or deterioration of the image, depending on the chemicals used during mounting.

According to the Guardian newspaper, Gursky considers the bleak landscapes one of his favorite photos. “For me it is an allegorical picture about the meaning of life and how things are.”

Some reporters and critics were more skeptical. In a post titled “Here’s the world’s most expensive (and boring?) photo,” a writer at the Seattle Post Intelligencer joked, “One can only assume the collector really likes stripes of green and gray.”

A little jostling is going on between Bonhams and Christie’s as to who did
best in London’s Asian art sales. Christie’s claims pole position for
Chinese antiques with £28 million, which is incontestable. But Bonhams gets
the higher figure for the week at £31 million by virtue of a record £4.6
million million sale of Japanese art. Bonhams also claimed the top price of
the week with a £9 million Chinese vase, but Christie’s might claim the
biggest surprise. In its South Kensington sale, a tiny ivory stamp with a
carved lion handle, described as 19th or 20th century, had been bought by a
British collector in Hong Kong in the 1940’s, and was estimated at £3,000.
Imagine the owner’s face when it sold for £646,000. The figures must be
satisfying for Bonhams’ Asian art head, Colin Sheaf, who left Christie’s to
work for Phillips (before it became Bonhams) over ten years ago. When he
did, Christie’s staff were said to have thrown darts at a picture of him in
their office. Maybe they are doing that again now. Overall, though, some
steam has gone out of the Chinese market as many of the higher valued lots
went unsold.

New York did not set the only photography records last week. In a
Christie’s sale in Paris, a selection of 100 works by Henri Cartier-Bresson
were offered from the Cartier-Bresson Foundation, and one sold for 433,000
Euros. The photographer was famously uninterested in exploiting the art
market, and never made editions of his prints. Instead, he signed the ones
he wanted people to have. The others, he said, were never meant for sale and
should be valueless.

Two early works by Francis Bacon were withdrawn from Sotheby’s sale in
New York last week as they had been denied an export license by the British
government due to their national cultural importance. Dating from c.1935,
they are early views of interiors made when Bacon was making a living as an
interior decorator. Tate is hoping to include one of them in its exhibition
about the influence of Picasso on British art next year. Curiously, both had
been on the market before in the last ten years had a UK institution wished
to buy them.

A SERIES of key consignments at the latest Contemporary art auctions helped lift the mood of the art market in New York.

Despite the jitters on the stock market throughout the week, the Contemporary series generated an hammer total of $624m (£410.5m) including day sales, well above the $346.3m (£227.8m) from the rather disjointed Impressionist & Modern sales the week before.

Sotheby's evening sale on November 9 took place after a fall of almost 400 points on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, with the company's own share price down by around four per cent across the day's trading.

Nevertheless, the sale made $228m (£182.9m) against a $192m-271m pre-sale estimate – the highest total at Sotheby's for a Contemporary art auction since May 2008.

The selling rate ran at 85 per cent (62 of the 73 lots found buyers), but the main contributing factor to the sale's success was the performance of the group of four paintings by the American abstract expressionist Clyfford Still.

They came from the estate of the artist's wife Patricia and were being sold to help endow the new Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. The top taker was the large oil on canvas 1949-A-No.1, which was chased by five bidders and made a record $55m (£36.2m). Only Bacon, Warhol and Rothko have made more at auction in the Contemporary sector.

Estimated at $25m-35m and generating a round of applause in the saleroom, it was knocked down to an anonymous phone bidder and underbid by New York dealer Chris Eykyn.

Clyfford Still is not an artist who appears regularly at auction and before this sale the highest price was the $19m (£10.5m) seen for 1947-R-no.1, which sold at Christie's New York in November 2006.

This figure was also eclipsed at Sotheby's by 1947-Y-No.2, which made $28m (£18.4m) to a different phone bidder against a $15m-20m estimate, while the later PH-1033 from 1976 made $17.5m (£11.5m) and the smaller PH-351 added another $1.05m (£690,790).

Two paintings by Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera sold here at auction Friday for 9.6 million pesos ($709,000).

The pieces were part of a sale at the Morton auction house of 194 works by Latin American artists.

The Rivera painting knocked down for the highest price was the "Tehuana" portrait that the famed muralist created in 1929. It went for $406,000.

The second priciest was "Portrait of a Spanish Woman with Mantilla," painted in 1908 after the artist went on a study trip to Spain, which sold for $302,000, while the other Rivera work, the watercolor "Sailor," brought in $37,000.

Works by David Alfaro Siqueiros, another of Mexico's great 20th-century muralists, also sparked some of the highest bidding: "Peasant and Slave" (1930) went for $88,700, "Bouquet of Flowers" (1962) for $47,000, and "Unfinished Self-Portrait" (1921) sold for $33,000.

Seldom seen at auction in Mexico are works by Maria Izquierdo, the first Mexican painter to exhibit her works outside the country - at New York's Art Center in 1930 - since most are in the hands of private collectors and foreigners.

For that reason the bidding for her painting Friday, a self-portrait dated 1940, was one of the most hotly contested and was finally knocked down for $133,000, considerably more than expected.

Morton has held this auction of Latin American art twice a year for the last three years, in May and November.

Despite the massive attendance at Thursday night's auction, not all the paintings on the block found buyers.

As the manager of the auction house, Luis C. Lopez Morton, told Efe several days ago, this is Mexico's most important art auction and the most noteworthy in the world of Latin American art. EFE

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO, 19 de octubre.- En 1950, Rufino Tamayo (Oaxaca, 1899-Ciudad de México, 1991), que ya acaparaba la atención de críticos europeos y estadunidenses, participó en la Bienal de Venecia con el óleo Rebanadas de sandía, en el que enfatizaba los símbolos de la naturaleza y la vida cotidiana en México. La pintura atrajo la atención de coleccionistas internacionales, como el estadunidense Sam A. Lewisohn, quien la adquirió en febrero de 1951 y dos años más tarde la donó al Museo de Arte Moderno (MoMA) de Nueva York.

Desde entonces, Rebanadas de sandía integró exposiciones de arte latinoamericano del recinto neoyorquino; por ejemplo 2 Centuries of Mexican Art, en mayo de 1953, que también se presentó en París; XXVth Anniversary Exhibition, en 1955, o Tamayo Retrospective, en el Museo de Arte de Phoenix, en 1968.

Sin embargo, autoridades del MoMA decidieron deshacerse de la pintura en una subasta que llevará Sotheby’s el próximo 16 de noviembre, a fin de recaudar fondos para nuevas adquisiciones. There was no "Occupy Wall Street" movement when the Museum of Modern Art began planning an exhibit to commemorate the 80th anniversary of its Diego Rivera retrospective, and yet the timing now seems prescient. Who better to evoke the feelings of the dispossessed than the great Mexican muralist?

"Diego Rivera: Murals for the Museum of Modern Art" is a small but unusual exhibit. The five central pieces are of a format — portable fresco murals — that was perfected for the original exhibit in 1931. There are interesting technical things to learn about this, but this is not nearly as interesting as the show's story line, especially in light of the current dialogue about social class and power.

What seems so startling today is that an avowed communist artist whose work was not really very "modernist" would be given a show at MoMA and welcomed by the city's upper-class cultural elite during the depths of the Great Depression.

A little background: Mexican muralism emerged in the 1920s in the wake of a bloody, decade-long revolution that brought a Marxist-dominated government to power. Under the direction of education minister José Vasconcelos, public buildings were adorned with murals that taught socialist ideals and celebrated Mexico's precolonial indigenous culture.

The movement brought international fame to Rivera and its two other major figures: José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. In 1931, MoMA was a fledgling institution that had only given one other artist a one-person show — Henri Matisse. Matisse, of course, embodied the kind of art-for-art's-sake aesthetic that MoMA was founded on and still represents today.

Newly Discovered Velázquez at Bonhams: A portrait consigned to Bonhams as a little-known work by 19th-century artist Matthew Shepperson has been identified as a lost painting by Spanish master Velázquez. The portrait of a bald gentleman, thought to be Philip IV's Master of the Hunt, will be the highlight of Bonhams's old master paintings auction in London on December 7. The painting was consigned at Bonhams Oxford in August 2010 with a group of works by Shepperson, but further investigations led to the new attribution, which has now been confirmed

On the afternoon of April 3, swiss dealer Urs Meile called the Beijing home and studio of Ai Weiwei, one of China's top contemporary artists who is best known for helping design the "Bird's Nest" Olympic stadium three years ago.

Right away, Meile could tell something was wrong. He and the artist have been friends for years and talk once a week, but this time Ai wouldn't say much at all and there was a strange strain in his voice. "I'm flying to Hong Kong tonight," Ai told him, before mumbling, "It's so crazy, so crazy here."

The next morning, Meile got a frantic call from collector Uli Sigg, a former Swiss ambassador to China who had planned to meet the artist upon arrival. "You'll never believe it," Sigg told the dealer. "Weiwei got arrested."

Nothing has shaken up the art world this year like the arrest and nearly three-month detention of Ai Weiwei (pronounced "Eye Way-Way"), the 54-year-old son of a poet whose irreverent photographs and conceptual sculptures—often made from porcelain, tea or temple wood—have earned him a coveted spot among China's pivotal, post-Mao generation of artists. Major museums like New York's Museum of Modern Art and London's Tate Modern collect Ai's work, and his pieces have sold at auction for as much as $657,000.

The September issue of the art magazine Frieze ran a glossary of "keywords" in contemporary art and culture. Under "Photography" the compilers wrote: "The first photograph was produced in 1826. In 2009 Tate advertised the following job for the first time: Curator (Photography and International Art). Discuss." The question invited was: why had it taken so long for photography to be viewed as a serious art form in Britain? The Museum of Modern Art in New York, for instance, appointed its first curator of photography, Beaumont Newhall, in 1940.

There are wider cultural and historical reasons why America embraced photography so enthusiastically while Britain did not. The relatively new, technologically driven medium was ideally suited to the fast-forward momentum of American life in the early-to-mid 20th century and to capturing the country's vast natural landscapes and the towering architecture of its cities. Britain's relationship with photography was less open-minded, more suspicious, more retrospective. We tended for too long to look back, acknowledging photography's masters, from Atget to Cartier-Bresson, Bill Brandt to Robert Frank, in celebratory exhibitions that were staged in Britain long after they had been safely canonised elsewhere.

Sotheby’s New York's sale of Latin American Art will include Watermelon Slices, a major work by Rumino Tamayo depicting one of his signature themes. Tamayo’s 1950 painting that is owned by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) will benefit the Acquisitions fund and is expected to sell within the ball park of 1.5-2 million. Watermelon Slices has been part of the MoMa’s collection since 1953 and has also been included in numerous other exhibitions worldwide.

Carmen Melian, Head of Latin American Art at Sotheby says, “This is one of the most important Tamayo Watermelon paintings to appear on the market for several years. Collectors are sure to gravitate towards a work of this iconic subject matter from an important period that also boasts such a distinguished provenance.”

The use of geometric shapes were an important part of Tamayo’s style further justifying his status as one of the most acclaimed artists of his generation. Although the red, white, and green colors of the watermelon are symbolic of the colors in the Mexican flag, the watermelons also hold a more personal significance for Tamayo. As a young boy growing up in Mexico City, he helped his aunt sell fruit at her market stand.

Over the past few weeks, the death of Steve Jobs triggered a wild rush of fans to measure and celebrate the impact of Apple technologies on modern music-making.

Web posts and chat forums hung heavy with long testimonials espousing the benefits of portable, one-touch recording systems, and the ability to fly tracks across continents via email so that world music could be drawn closer together. One blogger's take compared the seismic impact of The Beatles' Apple era to Jobs' Apple revolution. It's a creative angle, surely, but one fraught with a conflicting paradigm: The Beatles made art, while Jobs made a tool to create art. Comparisons to da Vinci were equally conflicted, although a bigger question remained unanswered: Did Jobs' spirited inventions work to improve art, or make it so that the best was never as great while the worst was just that much better?

Twenty-first-century bandleaders everywhere - at least those who own a computer - have become used to musicians telling them: "I'll send you my tracks so that you can check them out," or "I'll just add my part on my computer," or "Can you lend me $3 so I can take the bus home?" Only one of those three thoughts have been around since the time of Apple Corps, while the other two have reinvented the way people make music.

Once, while recording a later Rheostatics album, one of our singers was having trouble nailing his lead vocal. Nearing the end of the day, he said, "Why don't I just take the tracks back to my place and sing to them?" We all thought it was a useful idea, and, in the end, he came up with the goods in the comfort of his home studio. But we'd let the genie escape the bottle. He ended up recording all of his vocals at home, which meant that we couldn't be there while he sang - cheering him on, saying stupid stuff and making jokes to ease the tension. While personal recording can facilitate good tracks and artistic convenience, bands work best, I think, when their players are forced to spill their guts in full view. By making the studio portable and the process more convenient, this had been lost. I was reminded of something Ani DiFranco once wrote: "A tool can be a weapon; it depends on how you hold it."

Jobs' effect on music wasn't just on the musicians, but on consumers, too. Several years ago, Peter Gabriel released tracks that encouraged the listener to mix or remix the songs in their own style. It was an idea that caught on like wildfire, but, to my mind, it was too much like sandwich and salad bars, or TV broadcasts where you're in command of camera angles. I'd rather have my food brought to me, to say nothing of records that have been expertly mixed and laboured over by a recording professional. As it turned out, Gabriel's altruism gave way to other innovations, the most extreme being those found on the latest record by Iceland's fierce electric pixie, Björk, called Biophilia.

America's shared culture is explored in “Infinite Mirror: Images of American Identity,” an art exhibition on view through Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery at Keene State College.

Through paintings, prints, photographs and video, 42 artists' works “reveal the triumphs, tragedies, relationships and traditions that inform our notions of nationhood,” curators said.

TORONTO — A last-minute addition to a new art exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto was due to arrive just before Saturday's official opening.

The exhibit, called "David Hockney's Fresh Flowers: Drawings on iPhones and iPads,'' is a collection of more than 200 digital files the British artist has been crafting over the last few years.

The British artist, now 74, began finger-painting on an iPhone with an application called Brushes and then starting using the iPad because of its larger "canvas.''

Working in a digital format means he can keep contributing art to the Toronto exhibit long after it opens. With a quick email, the museum gets a new piece.

"Technology is playing an ever bigger part in our lives _ how we create, how we receive, how we interpret the culture that is all around us,'' said the ROM's CEO Janet Carding.

"'Fresh Flowers' gives us a wonderful opportunity to examine its influence on art and its influence on museums.

"How technology affects the way that we share ideas is at the heart of the show.''

REPORTING FROM MEXICO CITY -- The hard-hitting news magazine Proceso recently published a large-format special issue devoted to the tragedy of the drug war in the border city of Ciudad Juarez. For its cover image, Proceso chose a work from the golden era of Mexican modernist painting, a 1942 piece by Manuel Rodriguez Lozano called "Tragedy in the Desert."

The painting shows the backs of three hooded women who appear to be in mourning over the body of a female figure in a flat and desolate expanse of earth, blood emanating from her form. As a news image, the painting from more than half a century ago is meant to evoke the hopelessness felt by victims of Mexico's war, with its 40,000 dead.

"Tragedy in the Desert" is the first artwork seen by visitors to a sweeping exhibit on Rodriguez currently at the Museo Nacional de Arte in the historic center of Mexico City. It is an affecting and sad image, the colors muted, the perspective flattened in a recognizable Rodriguez motif (links in Spanish).

This is the first major museum exhibition devoted to the full scope of the career of Willem de Kooning, widely considered to be among the most important and prolific artists of the 20th century. This image released by MoMA, N.Y. shows a painting called "Woman, I," by the Dutch-born artist Willem de Kooning. The piece is part of a retrospective of the artist?s career at New York?s Museum of Modern Art, opening Sept. 18 until Jan. 9.

Six years in the making, the Willem de Kooning retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art is surely one of the not-to-be-missed shows of the fall season.

Occupying the museum's entire sixth-floor gallery space, the exhibition brings together nearly 200 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures that illuminate de Kooning's restless journey between abstraction and representation during nearly seven decades of work.

The show, opening to the public on Sunday, begins with two charming still lifes that reflect the Dutch-born artist's strong academic training and background in commercial art, including one painting he made as a boy of 12.

Art world rock star Kiki Smith may be best known for her sculptural work but a new exhibition at the Tang Museum reveals that photography has been central to her artistic practice for years.

“I Myself Have Seen It: Photography and Kiki Smith,” a traveling exhibit that originated at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington in Seattle, is the first comprehensive look at the role of photography in her work. It will include over 5,000 snapshots, over 100 large-scale photographs, including source photos alongside the sculptures inspired by them as well as prints, artist’s books and videos.

The exhibit examines photography’s influence on the development of Smith’s aesthetic — often involving the deconstruction of ideas about the body, gender roles, sexuality, mythology and folk tales.

I don’t know about you, but I love art. But other than stumbling into the odd gallery on my way to dinner every once in a while, I don’t really follow contemporary artists, and I couldn’t tell you who’s who or what their work is like. That goes double for vegan artists. Right now the Metropolitan Community Church of New York is giving us a chance to change that, by hosting a Vegan Art Show, with an opening night reception this Wednesday, Sept. 21.

The exhibit, which opened Sept. 4 and runs through Oct. 28, features 19 vegan artists working in a variety of mediums (the only participant whose name I recognized was Mickey Z., but you might also know Antonia Barbano, Pam Curry, Alyssa Diaz, Daniel Dunbar, Shoshana Frishberg-Izzo, Danielle Geist, Thomas Good, Valerie King, Lauren Krohn, Les LaRue, Kerry Lea, Sara Pegarella, Jennifer Powell, Jody Rasch, Karen Stevenson, Greg Straight Edge, Frances Wood and Claire Zeaman.) And the free fete this Wednesday, from 5pm to 8pm, will be replete with vegan wine (from Vegan Vine, perhaps?), hors d’oeuvres from Caravan of Dreams, and music. Some of the proceeds will benefit the church and other charities, while a portion of handmade jewelry sales will go to New Jersey’s For the Animals Sanctuary.

I’d be first in line if I could get out of work at a decent hour, but hopefully your job is more conducive to socializing than mine is. The Houston Fine Art Fair will be the first international fine
art fair to be held in Houston, the third largest art market in the
United States.

Held Sept. 15-18 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, the

stars. Works will include painting, drawing, print, editions,
installation, sculpture, and photography. This inaugural fair is

The new exhibition will open on Sunday at MoMA PS1 showing how the attacks change our perception of art

On Sunday, the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, New York’s Museum of Modern Art will open a unique September 11 exhibition at its PS1.

What makes the exhibition unique is that it is actually made up of 70 pieces made before, or shortly after, the attacks, but whose interpretations can change thanks to them. According to the Observer, the exhibition even includes no text on the walls, letting the pieces speak for themselves.

MoMA PS1 curator Peter Eleey told Reuters that it was especially challenging to come up with the proper exhibition to respond to the attacks. "There were certain things that we did not want to see, I think in part because of how much we have been forced to see," he said.

Some of the pieces included in the exhibition are a “War Is OVER (If You Want It)” poster by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Barbara Kruger's "Untitled (Questions)" (1991), which attacked political hypocrisy and Gordon Matta-Clark's "City Slivers" (1976), which highlights the photographers obsession with the Twin Towers.

Bob Dylan is to show off art inspired by his recent tour of the Far East at a New York City gallery.

The Like A Rolling Stone singer will unveil drawings and paintings as part of The Asia Series at the Gagosian Gallery.

The pieces were created during Dylan's travels to Japan, China, Vietnam and South Korea.

A gallery spokesperson says, "(The exhibition contains) first-hand depictions of people, street scenes, architecture and landscape. Conversely, there are more cryptic paintings often of personalities and situations, such as... a scenographic tourist photo-opportunity in a Tokyo amusement arcade."

Dylan's special pieces will be featured for a month, beginning on 20 September (11).

The legendary singer/songwriter has previously exhibited art in Denmark and Germany.

NEW YORK - On that fateful September morning, renowned artist Xu Bing was groggily getting up after a late night at work in his Brooklyn art studio. He turned on the television to find that New York had changed forever.
He ran outside and watched as the second plane hit. Then he saw the buildings collapse. The scene felt like a movie, too enormous to comprehend, he said.

The controversial exhibition about graffiti and street art at Los Angeles' Museum of Contemporary Art, "Art in the Streets," won't be coming to the Brooklyn Museum next year, and it's a huge loss for New York City. Museum director Arnold Lehman cited "the current financial climate," but that hasn't stopped people from criticizing the show as a celebration of vandalism and expressing joy at its cancellation.

"Art in the Streets," organized by Jeffrey Deitch (former owner of Deitch Projects, where I was a director), has been the most attended exhibition in the history of the MOCA - and it has surely broadened the institution's audience. This is art by and for the people; the people have responded.

Nash was a guest curator on this project, organizing the exhibit with Jasen Emmons, director of curatorial affairs at the EMP Museum, a nonprofit organization in Seattle dedicated to the exploration of creativity and innovation in music, science fiction and popular culture.

Emmons made it clear that Nash was the most likely person to help curate.

The legendary musician recorded as a solo artist and with Crosby, Stills & Nash and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and, in addition, became well known as a photographer, collector and a pioneer in digital imaging and printing.

Emmons said, "'Taking Aim' is an insider's look at rock photography, seen from Graham's perspective ... and provides a unique look at musicians and the photographers who captured the essence of rock 'n' roll and helped shape its image."

Nash said, "It was an absolute pleasure to have been invited to take part in this exhibit. Working with Jasen and his wonderful staff has been a joy, and we were always on the same page.

"The images being presented are the culmination of months of work and thousands or images. ... I sincerely hope everyone enjoys our choices."

Leo Villareal is the most prominent light sculptor of his generation. In 1997, he abandoned his work with interactive television and began creating sculptures in which he combined strobe lights, neon, and most recently, LED bulbs activated by the artist’s own custom-made software.

The magic of Villareal’s work lies in its sequencing. Thousands of tiny white LEDs may resemble a starry night as seen in a planetarium, while tubes of colored LEDs masked by a diffuser are like a Monet painting of water lilies set in motion. His hypnotic and exhilarating light sculptures will be appreciated by both the young and old, experienced and inexperienced art viewers, students of both the arts and sciences, and engineers who will be tempted to analyze the artist’s algorithms.

French artist Julien Berthier has designed a fully functional boat to look

as if it is sinking. The 21ft yacht was cut in half with a new keel

and motor added so it remains in the sinking position while being fully

functional. He describes it as “the permanent and mobile image of a

wrecked ship that has become a functional and safe leisure object.”

Berthier has taken the boat (or should I say half-a-boat) across the

English Channel to London and has toured it around Europe , getting plenty

of offers of assistance from unwitting good Samaritans, who would

presumably be either very annoyed or rather bemused by the contraption.

The designer and artist designed and built the floating installation in

2007. He named his creation Love Love.

It's not often that one can find art-related news on the front page of American newspapers, except when a big time scandal rattles the status quo. In 1990, the director of the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati was put on so-called "obscenity" trial for exhibiting provocative photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe. Now, Mapplethorpe's name is once again front-page news, but this time it marks a happy occasion. The Los Angeles Times reports today that the late artist's extensive archive, consisting of many thousands of photographs, negatives and letters, was jointly acquired by the Getty Trust and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It's safe to assume that neither of these museums will be in danger of court procedures when they decide to display some of the homoerotic images by the late photographer. What a difference two decades make.

A flea market is where artist Eduard Martinet goes every time he needs material for his sculptures. And no, he doesn’t live in Boca. He uses kitchen pans, car lights, old typewriter keys, and other other junk sitting around at car boot sales or flea markets to build his sculptures. Mr. Martinet has the uncanny ability to take something rusty and transform it into something beautiful. He carefully sculpts every piece after sketching every angle; the whole process takes a great deal of time.

Despite the best efforts of the Egyptian army and a human shield, some of the artifacts inside the century-old Egyptian Museum were damaged during a brief wave of looting, authorities in Cairo say. And it sounds as if the damaged goods include treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun, based on comments from the country's top archaeologist as well as a little sleuthing by archaeologists looking at video footage shot inside the museum.

Ballet is dying? Really? With the release of Jennifer Homan's new book Apollo's Angels, it seems this question is a popular topic of discussion. While I agree that, yes, there was a ballet heyday in the 1970's, I think the art form is far from dead. One only has to look at ballet's recent publicity and media focus to see that.

I'll admit, I haven't read Ms. Homan's book. It's on my list, so I'll get to it. But the question she has raised within the dance community got me thinking and I wanted to write about it.

I hardly think you can call ballet dying, when during a two hour interval of watching ABC, I managed to see at least eight commercials for the Darren Aronofsky film Black Swan

and a Blackberry commercial starring American Ballet Theater soloist Misty Copeland.

That is a lot of ballet streaming straight into millions of American homes. Especially considering the two hours I watched television was on a Wednesday night between 9pm and 11pm, an hour of which was the popular Emmy winning show Modern Family. That's not all the ballet in commercials either. Michele Wiles, an American Ballet Theater principal, stars in an I am New York commercial too.

But the government’s efforts to bury history have instead provoked slumbering memories of the Gukurahundi, Zimbabwe’s name for the slaying and torture of thousands of civilians here in the Matabeleland region a quarter century ago.

“You can suppress art exhibits, plays and books, but you cannot remove the Gukurahundi from people’s hearts,” said Pathisa Nyathi, a historian who lives here in the provincial capital. “It is indelible.”

HUMBERTO CALZADA'S painting, "A Painted Memory II," was created in 2010. Calzada's paintings often depict Cuban architecture, often in a state of emptiness or disrepair. "It's a metaphor for the transience of memory. It starts to deteriorate," says Adam Justice, Polk Museum of Art's curator.

"It's a symbol of disgrace, of tragedy. ... But also, water is a symbol of purification and rebirth. So there is hope."

SURREALIST CUBAN PAINTER WHOSE WORK IS ON DISPLAY AT THE POLK MUSEUM OF ART

The paintings at first seem like nothing more than parts of elegant houses — doors, balconies, foyers, courtyards — until you look closely and realize how pristine they look. Too perfect. No houses ever looked so beautifully, ideally perfect, and so they clearly exist in the realm of an imagined reality.

To be exact, they are houses from the memory of Humberto Calzada, houses from the Cuba he remembers as a child. Calzada left Cuba with his family as a 16-year-old in 1960, fleeing the new communist regime. They settled in Miami among the Cuban expatriates, where they recreated the music, food and culture of Cuba.

"But what we saw was very different. I started trying to re-create the visual imagery that was missing," he says.

"EL MISTERIO DEL TIEMPO: LA MAÑANA" is an acrylic canvas Calzada painted in 2005. His work is on display at the Polk Museum of Art.

Paul Getty Museum’s current exhibition, ‘Imagining the Past in France, 1250–1500’, are several large manuscripts that belonged to the noted bibliophile, King Charles V of France (r. 1364–1380).1 They offer a rare opportunity to examine how illustrations could suggest associations between manuscripts that we would otherwise tend to see as quite distinct, thus blurring the boundaries between literary genres. This article will consider examples from King Charles’ library and analyse visual relationships that bound his personal copy of the Grandes chroniques de France to three other manuscripts from his collection preserved in the library of the Louvre.2

Charles V’s Grandes chroniques was one of his prized possessions. Not only did he sign it in a colophon at the end of its first volume, but he also had its history of France updated twice during the last five years of his life. Newly written and illuminated historical texts were included in order to make this history of the French kings an especially authoritative historical record for his descendants.3

The Grandes chroniques also had a rich intervisual dialogue with ancient history, as a comparison between it and Charles’ personal manuscript copy of the ancient Roman historian Livy’s History of Rome reveals.4 Between 1354 and 1359 Pierre Bersuire completed his translation of Livy’s History of Rome into French for Charles’ father, King John the Good. Bersuire’s prologue presents the text as a response to King John’s desire to learn about ‘the virtuous deeds and notable works of ancient princes’, and to ‘know the art of chevalerie and follow the example of ancient virtue’ in the Romans who governed by great successions over such a long period.5 The translation was re-edited in two stages early in Charles V’s reign, and this revision became a bestseller that survives in 68 14th- and 15th-century manuscripts.6

There is more to New York’s Winter Antiques Show than Americana. Two thirds of the 75 exhibitors at this year’s 57th edition (Park Avenue Armory, January 21–30) present everything from antiquities, medieval manuscripts, arms and armour to Old Master prints and drawings, classical Chinese furniture and Fabergé. Inevitably, perhaps, many of the show’s outstanding offerings, if not precisely Americana, have some association with this great continent.

Canadian dealer Donald Ellis, for instance, unveils what he describes as arguably the most important Native American object to be offered for sale since the 1940s. It is a Yup’ik Eskimo mask from the estate of the Italian-American Surrealist artist Enrico Donati (1909–2008). Such masks may be considered the highest form of expression of Native American art. Certainly they exerted a profound influence on the Surrealists who escaped Paris to settle in New York in the 1940s. André Breton, Max Ernst, Roberto Matta and Donati, among others, all recognised their particular power and owned significant examples.

Never previously exhibited, the so-called Donati Studio Mask (Fig. 3; c. 1890–1905) was originally acquired by Adam Hollis Twitchell (1872–1949), who began trading along the Kuskokwim River in Alaska in 1905. Purchasing many of his masks directly from the natives immediately after the ceremonial dances he witnessed, Twitchell amassed an iconic group of 12 Yup’ik weather masks. When one last came on the market in 1984 it was acquired by Ernst Beyeler for his museum in Basel. This extraordinary mask would have been used shamanistically to predict and control the weather, and is the last remaining in private hands. It is priced in excess of $2m.

Principally known for his dreamlike compositions of female nudes in antique and contemporary surroundings, Paul Delvaux (1897–1994) did not form his mature painting style until 1935. With the inclusion of works by Cézanne, Ensor, Ingres and others, this exhibition examines Delvaux’s early years and uncovers the rich and complex origins of his art.

Born in 1897 in Antheit near Liège, Delvaux trained at the Académie Royal des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, from 1919 to 1920. His early landscapes are here hung beside those of contemporaries. Canvases by Delvaux, Alfred Bastien, Adolphe Keller and others frequently depict the same subjects (even specifically identifiable motifs) in Soignes Forest adjacent to Brussels. The vibrant Impressionist treatment of a sun-dappled stream (from 1921) is quite unlike the muted, sombrely toned views of trainyards also from this period. This demonstrates how receptive and flexible the young painter was, something evident throughout this survey.

In 1925 two significant changes occurred. Delvaux took up the subject of the nude (female, mainly) and started to work from imagination. Though Delvaux had discovered his prime subject he had not yet found a style. He painted his invented nudes under the influence of Renoir, Modigliani, the École de Laethem-Saint-Martin (Flemish Expressionists) and others. Some influences were transitory and disappeared without leaving a trace in later work. Modigliani (1884–1920 (represented here with a pencil drawing) was soon assimilated, though not before inspiring the graceful and individual Jeunes filles à la campagne (Young Women in a Landscape; 1929; Fig. 1). This restless experimentation was a source of dissatisfaction for the developing painter. He admitted ‘1928 and 1929 were dark years for me. I was unhappy with what I was doing and my paintings cluttered up my studio because nobody liked them…I destroyed some 50 paintings.’

December 18, 2010: The Argentine government authorized Tuesday the payment of 12 million pesos ($3 million) in compensation for expropriating a mural by Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros.

By means of a resolution published in the Official Gazette, the mural “was declared of public utility and subject to expropriation” under Argentine law.

The amount of compensation was determined by an administrative court as a result of a lawsuit filed by private parties disputing ownership of the work, painted by Siqueiros in 1933 with the aid of Argentine and Uruguayan colleagues.

Siqueiros (1896-1974) painted the mural in the basement of Los Granados, the suburban Buenos Aires estate of Natalio Botana, who at the time was editor of the daily Critica and provided refuge for the Mexican artist and his wife, the Uruguayan poet Blanca Brum.

“Ejercicio Plastico” (Plastic Exercise) deteriorated as Los Granados changed owners several times, and after being taken down and packed in containers that were left exposed to the elements of almost 18 years, the mural became the center of a judicial dispute.

In 2009, the Mexican artist’s mural was expropriated by the government while being restored by 40 Argentine and Mexican experts in a warehouse installed behind the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace.

On Dec. 3 the work was installed in a museum dedicated to “political art” in the Casa Rosada and was inaugurated by Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez and visiting Mexican head of state Felipe Calderon.

The mural is, however, the only work “without political content” by Siqueiros, a fervent communist.

The limestone quarries near the artist’s home in the village of Lacoste in the South of France provided the subject matter for this large painting. It depicts three quarrymen resting - one is relaxing, with his arms behind his head, while the other two men appear to be eating. The monumental and powerful forms of the men have a physical presence, painted with strong, block-like brushstrokes. The theme of the painting shows the influence of Fernand Léger, whom De Francia knew personally and has written extensively about, as well as the Italian artist Renato Guttuso. De Francia had shared a studio with Guttuso in the early 1950s. Both Guttuso and Léger painted subjects of social realism, such as workers and peasants.
